For this horizontal cedar fence installation in Camas, WA, our team replaced an old full panel fence with a modern combination of cedar and hogwire. We dismantled and hauled away the existing fence before installing 116 linear feet of 6-foot horizontal cedar fencing, 82 linear feet of hogwire fencing, and a 4-foot swing gate. The new layout combines enclosed sections with more open areas while maintaining a consistent cedar finish across the property.

The Challenge: Preparing the Site for a New Fence

The project began with the removal of an old full panel fence. Our team dismantled the existing sections and hauled away the materials to prepare the fence line for the new horizontal cedar and hogwire installation. The replacement design used enclosed cedar sections where greater screening was appropriate and hogwire sections where a more open view could be maintained.

Materials Used for This Camas Fence Installation

Our Camas fence installation included 116 linear feet of 6-foot horizontal cedar fencing and 82 linear feet of hogwire fencing. We used clear cedar boards for the horizontal sections. Cedar wood is naturally resistant to decay and insect damage. We also installed a pressure-treated 2×6 bottom rail to separate the fence boards from ground-level debris and moisture exposure.

PostMaster steel posts support the fence structure without dominating the finished cedar appearance. We also installed a 4-foot swing gate with the necessary hardware to provide practical yard access while maintaining the same horizontal design as the adjacent fence section.

Why This Project Combined Cedar Fencing and Hogwire

This layout uses horizontal cedar sections to create screening and hogwire sections to preserve visibility through selected parts of the fence line without fully obscuring the surrounding landscaping. Clear cedar gives both sections a consistent natural frame, while the steel mesh prevents the more open portions from becoming visually heavy. The combination allowed us to replace the previous full panel layout without enclosing the entire yard behind solid fencing.

Our Cedar and Hogwire Fence Installation Process

For this Camas project, our work included:

  • Dismantling and hauling away the existing full panel fence;
  • Laying out the new cedar and hogwire sections;
  • Installing PostMaster steel fence posts;
  • Building 116 linear feet of 6-foot horizontal cedar fencing;
  • Installing 82 linear feet of framed hogwire fencing;
  • Adding the pressure-treated 2×6 bottom rail;
  • Installing and aligning the 4-foot swing gate.

Horizontal cedar boards require consistent alignment and spacing across the fence line. Cedar wood expands and contracts in humid conditions. Leave gaps between boards to accommodate wood expansion. Use a level to ensure fence boards are installed straight and true. The gate must also be positioned and adjusted so that it opens properly without disrupting the horizontal lines of the adjoining section.

What to Check Before a Fence Installation in Camas, WA

Before we begin a fence installation in Camas, property boundaries, fence height, gate placement, and any applicable local requirements need to be checked for the specific site. These details can affect the layout before materials are ordered or posts are installed. Homeowners should also confirm whether neighborhood or homeowners’ association restrictions apply to the planned fence design.

FAQs

Does horizontal cedar fencing need maintenance?

Yes. Cedar is durable, but regular maintenance helps it stand up to changing Washington weather. Cedar fences can develop a beautiful patina if left untreated. Consider using a UV-blocking penetrating stain on cedar to prevent graying. Routine care can protect the homeowner’s investment and extend the fence’s lifespan.

Yes, when homeowners want to define a yard while preserving visibility and airflow instead of creating a fully closed-off fence line. It works well with cedar because the wood softens the look of the wire panels.

Cedar works well for natural beauty and privacy, vinyl is often chosen for lower upkeep, and chain link preserves visibility. The right choice depends on the property’s specific needs, project cost, desired durability, maintenance expectations, security goals, and style.
