For this Seattle, WA cedar fence installation, our team replaced an aging fence with 89 linear feet of clear cedar fencing designed to improve privacy and complement the landscaped property. Our installers managed the removal and installation process, dismantling and hauling away the existing fence before adding clear cedar boards at three custom heights. The completed work covered the full 89-foot fence line and included cedar posts mounted on pipe supports.

The Challenge

The homeowner needed a wood fence replacement that would create a cleaner property-line boundary and better complement the existing landscaping. Because the old fence no longer supported the intended look or function of the yard, our team removed it rather than attempting a limited repair. This gave us a clear fence line for the new horizontal cedar installation.

Residential Fencing with Custom Cedar Fence Heights

This residential fencing project used clear cedar boards to create the warm, natural appearance selected for the property. The material complemented the horizontal layout, while appropriate finishing and routine maintenance remain important in Seattle’s wet conditions.

We installed 14 linear feet of fencing at 4 feet tall, 6 linear feet at 5 feet tall, and 69 linear feet at 6 feet tall. These transitions allowed the fence height to follow the property layout while providing different levels of enclosure along the 89-foot fence line.

Fence Installation with Post-on-Pipe Supports

We installed the cedar posts on pipe supports to reduce direct contact between the wood and the ground. This construction detail is especially useful in Seattle, where prolonged moisture exposure can contribute to deterioration around wood posts.

Throughout the installation, our team focused on consistent horizontal board alignment, secure post placement, and clean transitions between the 4-, 5-, and 6-foot sections.

Why Clear Cedar Was Used for This Seattle Fence

Clear cedar provided the natural wood appearance selected for this property and supported the modern horizontal layout. It also created a consistent finish across the 4-, 5-, and 6-foot sections while complementing the established landscaping along the fence line.

Local Notes for Seattle Fence Projects

Seattle fence requirements depend on the total height, construction materials, placement, and site conditions. The City of Seattle generally does not require a construction permit for a fence eight feet high or lower unless it includes masonry or concrete elements exceeding six feet. Separate height and placement standards may still apply, particularly near retaining walls. Homeowners should also verify the property line and have underground utilities marked before digging.

FAQs

Does a cedar fence need maintenance in Seattle?

Yes. Cedar holds up well, but Seattle’s wet weather makes maintenance important. Depending on the desired appearance, cedar can be stained, sealed, or painted with a compatible exterior product. The selected finish should be maintained according to the product manufacturer’s instructions.

The 4-, 5-, and 6-foot sections allowed our team to adjust the level of enclosure along different parts of the property while maintaining one consistent horizontal cedar design.
